96% of written business communications are sent via the email system. Native extraction tools are a bottleneck in E-Discovery process and prevent rapid access to email archives. The SDR Discovery Supercharger removes this bottleneck, automatically providing an average 5-25x faster data access than the native software. If you use CA Message Manager and need to rapidly respond to HR, Legal, SEC or FINRA requests, you will regain control of the E-Discovery process, while saving tremendous amounts of time and money.
What does it do and what is it?
The Discovery Supercharger greatly improves the message recall performance of the E-Discovery and ISS indexing components of CA Message Manager (CAMM). It is a dedicated appliance deployed into your local network (behind the firewall), connecting at Gigabit speeds. It has a large internal storage capacity.
How much improvement can I expect with the Discovery Supercharger?
Most CAMM systems deliver 40,000-100,000 messages a day from a Centera. With the Discovery Supercharger in place, expect to be able to retrieve the message 5-25 times faster. Thus, a Discovery that would take a full work day can now be accomplished in as little as 60-90 minutes, enabling many discoveries to be run in the same time frame, crushing & removing the E-Discovery retrieval backlog.
How does this work & are there any legal or message security concerns?
Data requests from the CAMM Discovery interface are intercepted, and re-interpreted by the Discovery Supercharger, greatly increasing delivery speeds from the back-end storage units (Centera, NetApp, PermaBit etc). Retrieved messages are not altered in any manner, so the Chain of Custody remains intact.
Legal Department Benefits
- Avoiding punishing financial sanctions for “Failure to respond”: The Discovery Supercharger helps mitigate the risk of sanctions or unnecessary settlements by expediting the delivery of critical information. The faster delivery ensures YOU have the time to either respond to or adequately prepare for a matter, greatly lowering the risk of financial exposure.
- Determining which cases have merit and which ones are nuisances: The Discovery Supercharger greatly improves your ability to rapidly sift through cases and determine which ones have merit.
- Estimating costs, through understanding potential data volumes: If the case is not worth the discovery, production and review costs, it might be cheaper to settle rather than produce. The Discovery Supercharger helps you make such decisions quickly before too much effort has gone into data collection and processing.
- Reduce costs of 3rd Party ED Vendors: The additional speed provided by the Discovery Supercharger will allow YOU to effectively use this tool, with keyword searches, for “Early Case Assessment”; providing dramatic cost savings in volume of data produced and time to produce PSTs, and ingestion costs by 3rd party E-Discovery vendors.
IT Department Benefits
- Reduced Operational Cost: Faster email production equates to less time running discovery, reducing the extended hours and weekends that staff often would be required to monitor and support the function. This reduced operational load means reduced operational personnel costs. With an average 5-25X performance improvement, staff requirements can be dramatically reduced.
- Improved Responsiveness: Installing the Discovery Supercharger increases the IT Department responsiveness to hot legal issues, enabling the company to save money through more timely access to critical information. Faster turnaround allows IT to provide better service to the Legal Department.
- Discovery Training Included: We can provide training on the discovery system for your legal department, enabling them to perform their own discovery (self-service), freeing up valuable IT resources. Without the increased speed of Discovery Supercharger, this would not be possible due to the lack of performance of the current CAMM discovery system.
- Historical Legal Storage: The Discovery Supercharger greatly speeds up discovery requests, eliminating the need to store messages in alternate locations. This allows the SAN to be freed up, producing quantifiable cost savings and eliminating issues relating to retention policy enforcement.
General Q&A
We support CAMM r11.6 through r12.5
We do not modify the CAMM application – only its performance:
- The CAMM application is not altered in any fashion, nor do we change the messages in any way;
- The device is designed to be complementary to the existing infrastructure and not a replacement; it helps protect, increase the life span of and maximize the returns on your existing CAMM investment;
- Our device is passive. It sits on the network and waits for a discovery request and then automatically kicks into action;
- There is a GUI, but it is for information purposes only. There is nothing for the user to learn or do.
The Supercharger is network attached hardware which sits behind your firewall.
- External access is needed, but only for monitoring and maintenance activities; no client data is viewed or leaves via this portal.
- The device contains local storage, which is used as a working area for the discovery cache
- An essential upfront activity is for us to tune the device to the network and surrounding hardware infrastructure, and this takes several days to get right, so there is a setup fee. This is normally performed on site, by our engineers.
- The closer the Supercharger is to the end-storage devices (on the network), the better; however, we have run this where the data has been 50 miles away and have still seen a multiple-times improvement in delivery – however – this is not optimal.

Overall performance is linked to the type of request:
- The system works by fetching the data/email packets from the WORM device (NetApp, Centera, Permabit etc).
- These packets are then opened and the contents extracted.
- We do this fetching and extraction in a proprietary fashion. We have been servicing our clients using these technology for since 2007.
- The messages are extracted and placed in the CAMM discovery cache the way they are now.
- Recall performance is based upon data scarcity: The fewer messages there are per retrieved packet, the “slower” the performance. CAMM normally produces 40k-100K messages per day; Discovery Supercharger typically produces 450K to 1.4M per device per day, and in certain configurations we have seen rates well above 2M and in the test lab have exceeded 4M. (Our new archiving and analytics solution tests out at 15 million messsages a day by comparison!)
- Multiple appliances can be used per install; Once configured, Appliances are dedicated to specific systems;
- The device is leased on a long termed basis:
In reality, it pays for itself within a day or two of being turned on, by reducing the discovery windows from Months to Weeks; Weeks to Days, and Days to Hours.
